Saturday Kid Reads

This Saturday's episode is brought to you by books in which I try not to cry...

My Great Big Mama by Olivier Ka

When Mama goes on a diet because of what people say, her precious little son describes all the ways in which his Mama is special because she is big. What Mama sees as disadvantages are seen as special to her son. This book helps the reader appreciate more of the imperfections we see in ourselves, and encourage others to do the same. Tolerance and sensitivity are bred at home.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce

As a book lover, I adore this picture book for its message, and that is books have the power to change your life. They're more than just the inanimate objects you're forced to open during SSR or DEAR time, but they are truly treasures with boundless possibilities.  When Mr. Morris Lessmore's life is swept away, he lands in a new world taking care of books. We assume he is a librarian, and once you read it to the end and you realize what happens...steel yourself! It is a tear-jerker. LOVE this book! I show this Academy Award-winning animated short, and tell about the author living in New Orleans during the time of Hurricane Katrina, and it'll make sense. Animated Short

Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt

This book is for all the bleeding heart educators who believe that every child that comes in to their classroom has the potential to create wonderful things, to do wonderful things, and to be a wonder! You can spend your whole life thinking you aren't good enough if you are a fish being asked to climb a tree. This book is perfect if you are working on a culture of tolerance for students who are different. In this book, the student, Ally, has dyslexia and struggles until Mr. Daniels, her teacher sees her for who she really is-an exceptional kid. Great minds don't always think alike.

Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea

At the beginning of 5th grade, the students at Snow Hill School are trying to acclimate to the new year. Each student in the class is unique, and the only person who seems equipped to deal with all of them is their new teacher, Mr. Terupt. He is energetic, and enthusiastic and  the only thing that seems to make their day worthwhile is Mr. Terupt. How will they react when an accident changes everything for them?
